Lis stands for Labour as Goldsmid by-election called for 23 July
A by-election is due to take place on 23 July resignation of the inactive
Tory Councillor in Goldsmid Ward.
Labour and Co-operative candidate Lis Telcs is hoping
to meet as many local residents as possible in the coming weeks. She
has been working hard alongside Melanie Davis for over a year on campaigns
like '20 is Plenty'.
No doubt people will be flooded by leaflets from all sides. We hope
you support us based on our strong local record in the Goldsmid community
over many years (see this website!).
Lis
says, “I have been working alongside the hard working community
Councillor Melanie Davis since last June and have met many people in
the ward on the doorstep and at various events. I have petitioned people
in the Highdown area for our “20 is plenty” campaign, spoken
to people about the new communal bins and have attended family events
such as street parties.”
I will be able to give the time and commitment to working for the
people of Goldsmid ward."
Elisabeth Telcs is the Labour and Co-operative candidate for Goldsmid
ward. She was selected by local Party members in June 2008 when it became
clear one of the Conservative councillors was not doing his job and
had moved out of the city.
Elisabeth is 43 and has been a primary school teacher in Hove, Shoreham
and Worthing for almost 20 years.

with my details before calling on residents to talk to them to discuss
the local issues that concern them. Full details of
Surgeries are here. All are welcome. The two Conservative councillors
do not hold surgeries.

***Traffic and Transport***
Traffic calming and safety initiatives for pedestrians are one of
Labour's top priorities for Goldsmid Ward, focussing on the area near
Seven Dials and the Clarendon community.

BHASVIC road safety improvements
will be built sooner than expected after Goldsmid Labour Councillor
action.
New Road
in Brighton opened in summer 2007 after environmental improvements.
Already the vision of a pedestrian-friendly street in the middle of
Brighton's cultural quarter has been realised. It's a great place for
spending time, with lots of seating, eating and drinking.
Labour delivered a new pedestrian
crossing on Old Shoreham Road. Your local councillors supported
the campaign by residents for the crossing. We first petitioned for
it back in the 2003 local elections.

Goldsmid waste service descends into crisis

This was the ugly sight confronting Goldsmid Councillor Melanie Davis
and Lis Telcs when they were meeting voters in Livingstone Road.
The City's waste and recycling service is in crisis with rubbish and uncollected
recycling throughout Goldsmid Ward. These photos were taken when Councillor
Davis was recently in Livingstone Road and similar scenes were found in
Shirley Street and Goldstone Road. Click this

calling for action . The rubbish was cleared after our action.

***Waste and Recycling***
Improving recycling and reducing waste are among Labour
Councillor Melanie Davis' priorities in Goldsmid Ward and in the City
as a whole.
Recycling goes weekly
in parts of Goldsmid Ward. Labour Councillor Melanie Davis is pictured

covered.
Recycling
campaign: we are campaigning for doorstep recycling in the
'hard to reach' parts of Hove - and there's good news. Melanie Davis has
also written an article for the site about getting
into the recycling habit.

Governors and Councillors challenge the City Council over handling of
school expansion
(May 09)
The Tory Council has been challenged by the local ward Councillor and
Chair of Governors of Somerhill Junior School, over the handling of the
proposed expansion of Davigdor and Somerhill Schools.

St. Ann's Well Friends

Councillor Melanie Davis is chair of the Friends of St. Ann's Well Gardens.

***Schools***
Congratulations to Somerhill Junior School which was
rated a good school with outstanding features in the latest OfSTED
report. Inspectors said that all 27 aspects of care and education
were good or better. And the arts, PE and modern languages were just some
of the subjects considered outstanding. Congratulations to all staff,
parents and children.
Hove's secondary school catchment
area came into force in 2008. Goldsmid parents campaigned
for the a fairer, catchment-based system. Labour ward councillors consistently
supported a fairer deal for local families.
***Crime***
Latest crime figures locally and nationally
are encouraging but we want to maintain momentum with the
two Goldsmid Local Action Teams and other local initiatives.
Clarendon Local Action Team is
celebrating three years of achievements in tackling vandalism and anti-social
behaviour, and improving the local environment. Now we are campaigning
for the approach to be extended across the whole of Goldsmid.
See the difference the Action Team has made in Ethel
Street and Conway Street, where trees have replaced abandoned
cars and dumped rubbish.
***Environment***
In Goldsmid Labour campaigned successfully for doorstep
recycling and supporting green initiatives.
Save the Trees:
Labour Goldsmid Councillors brought Network Rail's destruction of trees
in Goldsmid to the attention of Environment Committee. Residents are continuing
their campaign for a coppicing alternative.
BHASVIC Field:
see the latest on the hockey plans.
Green travel plans
for Hove residents, including in Goldsmid Ward, will encourage more sustainable
ways of getting about and are coming down your street soon.
A Seafront-to-the-Downs
cycle route is being implemented with part of the route running
through the ward. Since this article was written much of the route, initiated
by the former Labour-run Council, is now in place, running up the Drive
from the seafront.
Car clubs
encourage responsible car use in the City, Labour wants them to expand
into Hove.
