Parking plans agreed:
Tory wrecking attempts fail (29 January 2005)

A report on Golsmid's parking scheme was agreed by Environment Committee on Thursday (26 January). It means the scheme will be largely unchanged as a result of a consultation which showed Goldsmid residents were pretty happy with the scheme as it was.

The report rejected many of the original proposals which were unpopular with both residents and ward councillors.

"This is a positive response to the consultation, the proposals reflect what people wanted," said Goldsmid Ward Councillor Simon Battle at Committee.

"I am relieved that the Goldsmid Parking scheme is not going to be undermined by unnecessary changes," adds Cllr Vince Meegan. "Meanwhile the new scheme for residents north of Hove Station will make it easier for them to park nearer their homes."

In an unexpected snub to Goldsmid Residents and their own party colleague, our fellow ward councillor Anne Giebeler, the Tory group voted against all recommendations at Committee.

Despite overwhelming opposition to increasing the pay & display hours and to extending the scheme to include Sundays, Conservative Councillors - Garry Pelzer-Dunn, David Smith, Ken Norman, and Ted Kemble - voted against the report.

They also tried in vain to ditch plans to introduce a new residents parking zone in the group of roads north of Hove Station. This was despite the fact that in the consultation, 72 per cent supported a new parking scheme.

The Committee decision means that:

  • There will be no change to the existing hours of operation.
  • The existing scheme will not be extended to Sundays.
  • The existing scheme will not be extended eastwards into Brighton.
  • A new standalone residents parking scheme will be introduced north of Hove Station
