Council pledges support in tackling anti-social behaviour and greening of Clarendon area (18 March 2005)Brighton & Hove City Council has pledged to support the Clarendon Local Action Team in its drive to improve community safety and the environment in the Clarendon Road area. Councillor Simon Battle wrote to Chief Executive Alan McCarthy requesting more support in removing blockages to the Action Team's work. Mr McCarthy said: "I note your concerns regarding funding for the greening of the Clarendon Road area and the work which has been carried out by the Clarendon Local Action Team. The council has carried out a number of initiatives in this particular area to improve its appearance. These have included the provision of more litter bins, nuisance vehicle action days and blitzes on flytipping. Also, approaches were made previously to local businesses in an attempt to involve them in any improvements planned for the area. "In order to ensure service providers are able to include these
improvements in their mainstream works, I have asked Jonathan Fortune,
Head of Operations, Public Safety Division, to contact Don Brown, who
I understand co-ordinates the Local Action Team’s work, in order
that he may work with the Local Action Team and find some ways forward
to provide solutions to meet the expectations of this community." Cllr Battle said: "Officers have now already reviewed the area and are going to assist us in drawing up a plan of action for improving the appearance of roads like Conway Street and Ethel Street." "New entry locks are due to be fitted on Conway Court shortly and gradually the lifts in the blocks of flats are being refurbished." "The Local Action Team has just written to local businesses to ask for their help in improving the environment through tree planting and other greening of the area." "The urgent need is to work with the private owners of land around Conway and Ethel where vehicles and rubbish are routinely dumped." |
