Children’s Centre for Goldsmid families (March 2006)

A new Children’s Centre will be located in Goldsmid Ward. Funding has been agreed for a new centre in Hove, to provide services for families with children under the age of five.

Services for children and families in the city are getting more than £5 million of extra money from the Labour Government. A Children's Trust Partnership is improving the way services to families are provided, including the new Children's Centres.

“This is exciting news for families in Goldsmid Ward and east Hove generally,” said Cllr Simon Battle. “The centre will be what is called a ‘Hub’ Children’s Centre meaning it will offer a full range of services.

“The Centre will be open 10 hours a day, offering early years provision, parenting support and health services.

"It will be a one-stop shop for families in our community.

Parents with young children, or those thinking of starting a family, will be interested in the Centre and the improvements which are taking place in services for children and families in Brighton & Hove.

The first stage, under the banner of the Children’s Trust Partnership, will be a package of services for every family with children under-five and the development of the children’s centres.

Services at the future Centre in Goldsmid will include:

• Early education and childcare
• Parenting & family support
• Support for additional needs including home visiting, services for children with special needs and teenage parents, and speech and language therapy
• Health Services, such as midwifery and post-natal support, and advice on issues like stopping smoking and breast-feeding
• Help getting back to work

Five children's centres have already been opened. For a full list of the services on offer to parents please see the Council’s change4children website here: change4children.

The Children’s Centre is expected to open by April 2008 at the latest.
