Tackling anti-social behaviour in Clarendon
(14 December 2004)

A group called the Clarendon Local Action Team has been established to bring together local interests to tackle community safety, health and environmental issues in the western end of Goldsmid Ward.

Convened by Sussex Police, the Action Team has adopted a plan for the area, which encompasses the roads to the south of Hove Station. The initiative is part of the Neighbourhood Renewal initiative funded by the Labour Government.

Graffiti in Ethel StreetWe are members of the Action Team and believe that the group is working together to tackle community concerns successfully. The Action Team is NOT a talking shop. Everyone involved from the police through to the residents involved knows we are there to make things happen in the area.

We are already implementing plans to remove graffiti and working with the police to tackle anti-social behaviour.

This is a new and innovative approach to community safety and it will be interesting to see if it works. If it does we would like to see similar groups established in other parts of the ward.
