Working for a greener Goldsmid all year round: recycling plans for Hove flats (May 2006)

Labour has delivered on its pledge at the last election to roll out kerbside recycling to the whole of Goldsmid Ward in Hove, where it's possible to do so.

“The Labour City Council has now introduced kerbside collections to the whole of Brighton and Hove where properties are accessible,” says Goldmsid Councillor Simon Battle.

Melanie Davis, pictured recycling at home in Hove, believes more must be done to reach and exceed the City’s target of recycling 35 per cent of household waste by next year.

“We can recycle over half of our household waste,” she says. “Green issues are at the top of Labour’s local agenda in Goldsmid. The next step is to ensure that properties where kerbside collection is difficult can recycle.”

There are 25 new blocks of flats coming on-stream this year including many in Hove, for details call 294754.

In the last year, 22,500 tonnes of 'waste' was recycled by residents using the kerbside scheme, bring sites and Household Waste Recycling Centres - equivalent to the weight of 146 jumbo jets.Carefully packed recycling box

More than 70,000 homes in the city now benefit from a fortnightly kerbside recycling collection and by the end of the summer all 90,000 households suitable for the service will be receiving it.

In addition, residents living in the city centre, and in parts of East Brighton, and Brunswick and Adelaide will have their recycling collected weekly.

Many of the larger blocks of flats across the city are unsuitable for kerbside collection systems, and a programme to introduce facilities specific to these buildings is currently being developed.

Alun Jones urges people to go green by investing in other ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce: “Residents can now buy cut-price composters, wormeries and water butts," he says. "Contact us and we will let you know how [see below].”
