Seafront Office for Hove (October 2006)

By Vince Meegan

In response to a letter from Councillor Battle and myself, Environment Committee has agreed to improvements to the Seafront Service which are of direct benefit to Hove residents.

The Council is going to establish an additional Seafront Information Point in Hove that would be staffed throughout the summer (May to September) and would be based beside the lifeguard station at the bottom of Hove Street.

I am delighted at this improvement, it will enhance Hove seafront for users during the summer months. Chair of the Committee Gill Mitchell also said in her response at Committee:

Shelter on Hove Seafront"Our seafront service have this year managed quite exceptional numbers of people on the seafront, not least the very busy evenings when it seemed everyone wanted to go for a swim after work.

"So far this season, the seafront team has dealt with over 169 minor first aid incidents, 44 major first aid, 52 rescues, 61 lost children, and provided over 1,800 pieces of safety advice to members of the public. In addition the team deals with every day enforcement issues such as speaking to cyclists, illegal traders, dealing with BBQs, and anti-social behaviour.

"As well as the lifeguard stations there is also one of the assistant seafront officers covering Hove between 11.30am and 7.00pm. This level of presence has helped to meet the increasing public needs and demands on the seafront service."
