Secondary School Admissions plans agreed despite Tory U-Turn (March 2007)

The new Secondary School admissions scheme will be based on catchment areas, councillors have decided. Goldsmid Labour councillors support the new system which means that all families living in the BN3 Hove postcode area, including Goldsmid families, have an equal chance of gaining access to Blatchington Mill and Hove Park Schools.

Latest figures show that the even more families in our ward were disadvantaged last year by the existing distance-based system.

The Tories opposed the plans at the last minute, having previously supported them on the all-party working group formed to come up with a fairer system. Their alternative proposals would have further reduced the admission chances of Hove families from Setpember 2008.

Hove School Admissions: Catchment Solution goes to consultation (November 2006)

Proposals have been announced for pupils applying to start secondary school in September 2008.

The plan is that Blatchington Mill and Hove Park would share a joint catchment area covering the whole of Hove. The system should mean more people getting one of their preferred schools.

We know the admissions system is a major concern in Goldsmid, particularly near Seven Dials, because families face uncertainty about getting a place at a local school every year.

The plans have been agreed in principle by the Council, and a further period of consultation is now taking place. We think the proposals are encouraging. They mean children will not be bussed out of Hove to schools which are miles away.
