Recommendations
for Goldsmid Parking Review
(20 December 2005)
We were overwhelmed by the overwhelming feedback received in response
to the Goldsmid parking review (Zone 'O').
More than a thousand responses were received by the City Council, and
lots of emails, letters and calls were lodged with us as your ward councillors.
Ward councillors have met with the Chair of Environment Committee, Councillor
Gill Mitchell, and Council officers leading the parking review. We are
pleased to say that we reached a consensus on the proposals which will
come to Committee on 27 January 2005.
The 'headline' decisions which will be recommended to Committee for approval
are:
- No change to existing hours of pay & display parking (no extension
from 4 hour to 11 hour parking)
- No change to existing Goldsmid 'O' zone boundary (no extension into
Brighton or to the west)
- A new 'stand-alone' parking zone to be created in the area consulted
north of Hove Station (not presently part of any scheme).
- The area consulted east of Goldsmid to be included in the Central
Brighton review.
- No extension of the scheme from 6-day to 7-day (the scheme will not
be extended to include Sundays).
We
believe that these decisions represent the best possible result for residents
in ensuring that Goldsmid's successful parking scheme is not undermined
by unnecessary changes.
In addition, the benefits of residents' parking will be extended to a
new part of the ward through the establishing of a new parking zone north
of the station.
On all of the above points the consultation supported the outcomes we
have chosen. We would have liked the scheme to be extended to include
Sundays but with 72 per cent opposition to this proposal, it would not
have been the right thing to do.
The detailed consultation results have been given to ward councillors
but we agreed that these would be reported via the established route and
made public via Environment Committee on 27 January 2005 (the Committee
Agenda is published a week or so before committee).
The above decisions are subject to ratification by Environment Committee.
